Pollution
China's economic progress comes at the expense of the environment. The industry economy grows quickly; but pollution becomes more serious. Unfortunately, the great majority of people here are insensitive to the pollution, the most dangerous enemy. A terrible disaster is in the making. Let us make concerted efforts to save China!
Car traffic is increasingly heavy. With a population five times as the population of the US, China is short of cultivated land. In spite of this case, the government is developing the private car industry greatly, and new highway construction takes up large areas of land.
Building development is in mass confusion. Building a house consumes more cement brick and decorative colorful brick in China than the Western nations. But these houses make little use of insulation letting heat flow out in the winter and letting the heat in during the hot summer months. House repairs are more difficult. Too many people concern about beauty of their own house, but they do not concern about the settings round the house. They spend large money on their own house, but they are stingy in cost of the environment around their house.
Garbage removal is primitive. Many people do not know garbage classification. Many people like to use plastic bags and batteries just once and then throw them away. Wasted plastic bags are visible everywhere. The government pays great attention to beauty of city. They afford large money in image structure of city, but they pay little attention to garbage classification. Large amount of garbage is made by large consumption.
River is polluted by chemical fertilizer, pesticide, chemical synthetic detergent, industry wastes, human excrement and urine, and garbage. Wasted water, excrement and urine flow directly into river without any sanitation practices. The water in most rivers or lakes is unsuitable for drinking. Many people are harmed by drinking water in polluted rivers or lakes.
Education in protecting environment is blank. People's understanding and concept of protecting the environment is quite low. People are concerned about their own health but do not care about environmental health. They like to inject and swallow more medicines, eat more wild animals, but they do not realize that the polluted food, water and air are threatening their health greatly.
China is imitating the West's high pattern of consumerism, featuring ownership of private car and big house and consuming large power source as Western nations do. The government is making efforts to achieve the goal. China is producing cars and large houses; exploiting large coalmines and oil field, large ore mines; building large multi-story buildings and huge highway construction patterns; and enlarging blindly cities and towns.
More and more people come to know the reality is that this planet cannot sustain the Western lifestyle (big houses in the suburbs and two cars in the garage) for everyone. And our energy sources are limited - so unless we start converting our oil/gas consumption to other options, we will no longer be able to sustain that lifestyle in the West. It is sad that we have to "hurt" before we shall wake up and make changes. Green is good. But some do believe that there is nothing we can do to stop humans from destroying the earth. It is only a matter of time. All this recycling and Kyoto protocol are just a delay.
